Opening a Bank Account in Germany: Complete Guide

Documents, Girokonto types, and the difference between traditional and online banks — everything you need to know before banking in Germany.

Opening a Bank Account in Germany: Complete Guide

One of the first practical steps after moving to Germany is opening a Girokonto (current account). Rent, salary, utilities — everything flows through a German IBAN. Knowing which documents you need and which bank suits your situation makes the whole process far smoother.

Documents You Will Need

To open a standard Girokonto you will typically need: a valid passport or national ID card, your Anmeldung (proof of address registration), and your Steuer-ID (tax identification number). The Steuer-ID is sent automatically by post after you register — usually within two to four weeks. Some banks will start the process without it but require you to submit it shortly after.

Traditional Banks vs Online Banks

Germany offers two main options: traditional branch banks such as Sparkasse, Volksbank, and Deutsche Bank, and fully digital banks. Each model has its strengths depending on what you need.

  • Traditional banks: in-person support, cash services, established local trust
  • Online banks (e.g. N26, DKB): fast digital application, often English-language app, low or no fees
  • Without an Anmeldung, most traditional banks will not open an account for you
  • Steuer-ID arrives by post — allow two to four weeks after registering
  • Some online banks allow a provisional account before the Steuer-ID arrives
  • If opening a salary account, confirm the IBAN format with your employer in advance

The Application Process

For a traditional bank, book an appointment and bring your documents. Major-city branches often offer English-language service. For online banks, everything is digital: identity verification is done via Video-Ident or PostIdent, both of which you can complete from home without visiting a branch.

Preparing Before You Move

Before leaving Turkey, check your bank's international transfer limits and exchange-rate fees. While your belongings are in transit with Avrupaya, keep enough cash or an internationally usable card on hand. Once your Girokonto is active, you can wire the Kaution (rental deposit) and first rent without any hassle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an account without an Anmeldung?

Most traditional banks require the Anmeldung. Some online banks allow you to start the process without it, but will ask for it shortly afterwards.

What is the Steuer-ID and how do I get it?

The Steuer-ID is your personal tax identification number in Germany. It is sent automatically by post after you register your address — no separate application is needed.

Should I keep my Turkish bank account open?

Yes, it is advisable. Your Turkish account will remain useful during the transition period and until your German account is fully operational.

Are there monthly fees?

Many basic Girokonten are free, but some banks charge a monthly fee if conditions such as a minimum monthly incoming payment are not met. Always read the account terms before signing up.

How long does it take to receive my debit card?

After a successful application, your Girocard typically arrives within seven to ten working days by post. Online banks tend to be faster.
