Backing up a desktop computer before moving

Computer packaging does not replace a backup of the files inside. Treat physical protection and data checks as separate preparation tasks.

Backing up a desktop computer before moving

Before you start

Back up important files and open a few to verify the copy. Then shut down the system using its normal shutdown procedure.

Practical steps

  • Match cables to photographs of their connections.
  • Have glass panels and heavy internal components assessed by suitable technical support.
  • Do not remove internal parts without the necessary knowledge; follow manufacturer or technician guidance.

Checks on arrival

Compare connections with your records during setup. Seek inspection before powering on if damage or loose parts are suspected, and retain the verified backup.

What to include in your quote request

Add the quantity, approximate dimensions and preparation status to your inventory. Include the floor, lift and vehicle access at both addresses. Photos help with the initial assessment. Confirm responsibility for packing, dismantling and reassembly in the written quote.
