How to Move a Refrigerator: Step-by-Step Guide

Moving a refrigerator safely requires defrosting, cleaning, upright transport and a waiting period before plugging in — here's exactly how to do it.

How to Move a Refrigerator: Step-by-Step Guide

A refrigerator is one of the trickiest appliances to move. Handle it wrong and you could end up with a broken compressor or a flooded moving truck. At Avrupaya, specialists in door-to-door moves from Turkey to Europe, the fridge is consistently the appliance that causes the most problems when owners try to cut corners. Follow this guide and yours will arrive in perfect working order.

1. Defrost at Least 24 Hours Before Moving Day

Switch the fridge off and empty it completely at least 24 hours before the move. Freezer compartments can hold several centimetres of ice — give it enough time to melt fully. If you leave this too late, meltwater will leak during transit, soaking your boxes and potentially damaging your floors.

2. Clean Inside and Dry Thoroughly

Once defrosted, wipe down all interior surfaces with a diluted vinegar solution to prevent odours developing in transit. Remove shelves and drawers and wrap them separately, or tape them securely in place. Make absolutely sure no moisture remains — a damp fridge is a mouldy fridge by the time it reaches its destination.

  • Empty all food and switch off the fridge at least 24 hours before moving.
  • Dry all interior surfaces and pack removable shelves separately.
  • Check door seals and secure doors with tape or bungee cord.
  • Protect compressor lines from vibration with padding.
  • Always keep the fridge upright during transport.

3. Always Transport Upright

Laying a refrigerator on its side allows compressor oil to flow into the cooling system — the number-one cause of post-move fridge failures. Always move it in an upright position. If it absolutely had to be tilted during loading, stand it upright at the destination and wait at least 4–6 hours before switching it on.

4. Wait 4–6 Hours Before Plugging In

Once the fridge is in its new spot, resist the urge to plug it straight in. Wait at least 4–6 hours so the compressor oil can settle and the cooling system can stabilise. Plugging in too soon risks permanent compressor damage. Avrupaya's delivery team will position the appliance correctly and remind you of this waiting period in person.

Frequently asked questions

How long before moving should I switch off my fridge?

At least 24 hours beforehand. For large upright freezers, allow 48 hours to ensure all ice has melted and the interior is completely dry.

Can a refrigerator be transported on its side?

Ideally no. Tilting allows compressor oil into the cooling system. If it was unavoidable, stand it upright at the destination for at least 4–6 hours before switching on.

How should I secure the shelves?

Remove glass and plastic shelves, wrap them in bubble wrap and pack separately. Alternatively, tape them firmly in place inside the fridge — especially important for glass shelves that can crack under vibration.

Does Avrupaya offer special protection for fridges?

Yes. All appliances are covered by 100% insurance. We also offer professional packing, disassembly, and reassembly as part of our service.

When can I switch the fridge on after delivery?

Wait at least 4–6 hours after the fridge has been placed upright at its new location. This gives the compressor oil time to settle properly.
