Cataloguing a record collection before moving

For a record collection, album order and sleeve condition matter alongside the number of boxes. A catalogue makes checks on arrival more systematic.

Cataloguing a record collection before moving

Before you start

Assign codes by shelf or music category. Photograph delicate sleeves and existing damage, and review the instructions for your protective storage products.

Practical steps

  • Group records so they cannot shift and their sleeves are not compressed.
  • Record the first and last album in each box in the catalogue.
  • Agree box capacity and transport arrangements without creating excessively heavy packages.

Checks on arrival

Check the delivery in catalogue order. Document damp or crushed packaging and move the collection into a suitable storage space.

What to include in your quote request

Add the quantity, approximate dimensions and preparation status to your inventory. Include the floor, lift and vehicle access at both addresses. Photos help with the initial assessment. Confirm responsibility for packing, dismantling and reassembly in the written quote.
